Why do I wake up with upper back pain?
It feels like a pulling pain (spasm) in my upper back muscles. I am just getting over a slipped disc in my lower back L5. Will the pain ease and when? I am seeing an osteopath.

- Most obvious answer might be an incorrect mattress if it is only occurring during sleep. Possibly you may need a firmer one.
- maybe you need a better mattress.
- May be your mattress is either too soft or too firm? Seeing an Osteopath is the best thing you could do as s/he will help to ease the pain and also advise on your bed, the type of chair you should sit in, exercises to strengthen muscles to support your spine better etc. I have had a similar injury so know how painful back spasms are and wish you the best of luck.
- if its just when you wake up this could be from a bad matress or pillow. you can buy specialist ones to help this. Alternatively it could be excercise or activities your doing that day puttin preassure on your back. lying in the one position all night can make that stress worse at it knots up.if this is the case focus on stretches before workouts and take it easy on your back.
- this is like how reflexology works, but just with more convenience. wear it home http://www.healthy-step.com
- You may need to have your spine aligned. Consult your physician, he or she may give you an order for some muscle relaxers to help you sleep at night.
